#5 Lincoln MKS. $37,665 24mpg highway, 17mpg city
Starting off our list is a proud American automobile. The Ford Lincoln MKS has a higher price tag then the rest of our Sedan’s, but it does come with a whole heck of a lot of great features. With smooth rounded edges, the MKS maintains its sporty roots while managing to stay humble. Although the outside is nice to look at, the inside is where you really start to notice why the price tag is a little high. Once you’ve shut your keyless door, you immediately notice the absolute silence.
The extremely roomy interior has laminated acoustic glass and a well insulated cabin which provides the driver and passengers with an unheard of calm. Fortunately, the MLK is packing a serious sound system so you can drive that silence out. The 14 speaker, 600-watt THX stereo system delivers a rich acoustic sound. Add in a hands free cell phone system and wood grain interior and stepping out of this car will be a jarring activity. Along with these niceties, a large trunk area, child safety locks and duel airbags make this car a good buy for families with kids.
#4 Volkswagen Passat. $28,300 29 mpg highway, 21mpg city
When people think of Sedans, they often think of slow cars that have minimal performance. The VW Passat decided to break this stereotype. The Passat is one of the most fun to drive Sedans on the list. The turbocharged 200 horsepower engine really gets the car up to speed quickly. Throw in its 6-speed manual transmission, relatively light curb weight, anti-slip traction control and its wide wheel base, and you have a quick little Sedan. Along with excellent performance, the Passat offers piece of mind in its durable construction and proven history. In today’s economy, people want to make sure that what they get will last. Ask any VW owner, and most will tell you that the service their car has needed has been minimal. VW’s are known for their durability and the Passat is no different. Inside the cabin, 5 adults can fit comfortable and the spacious trunk begs you to throw in your bags and get out of town for the weekend. Driver and passenger airbags, side-curtain airbags for the front and back seats along with daylight headlights provide an excellent security blanket. A sporty ride with a roomy cabin and a myriad of safety features make the Volkswagen Passat a worthy family Sedan.
#3 Hyundai Azera. $24,600 28mpg highway, 19 mpg city.
The Azera is a standard Sedan with some great safety features and a strong engine. Many people think that Asian produced cars are generally underpowered and made of lightweight, but flimsy, materials; the Azera will probably change some people’s minds. The 263 horse power engine shows that the Korean’s are serious about bucking the underpowered stereotype. The 5 speed automatic transmission and front and back individual suspension gives the Azera a smooth ride when speeding up and tight handling on corners. Although a fun car is nice to have, when it comes to family Sedan’s, safety is extremely important and the Azera doesn’t forget that. Its four wheel disc brakes will give you a chance to avoid any obstacles that appear while its duel front airbags, side curtain airbags and abdomen airbags will give you the needed protection incase you can’t avoid that collision. For the family Sedan, the Azera provides a good driving car several safety features that most other Sedan’s don’t have.
#2 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ. $20,550 17 mpg highway, 26mpg city
The second American made car on the list, the Chevrolet Malibu borrows its name from one of the most famous and glitzy coastlines in America. What does this car have in common with that coastline you ask, a glitzy interior. Hop into the drive seat and you will become embraced by the Malibu. Sitting in the front seat makes you feel like the car is holding on to you. The seats seem as if they were custom molded to each individual’s body shape. Looking out from the driver seat, the classical, yet futuristic display seems to have solved the question of how big to make each gauge. The wood paneling gives you a sense of style that is usually reserved for foreign luxury sedans. The sound system is powerful enough to be heard clearly by the driver of the car next to you, but also rich enough to hear most of the instruments in the New York Philharmonic. The Malibu doesn’t sacrifice safety features to cut down on price or appearance. With dual front and side impact airbags the Malibu matches all of its piers. However, the Malibu takes safety one step further by placing airbags on the backs of the driver and passenger’s seats that keep the back seat passengers from striking the front seats. The interior and safety aspects of this car are big draws and since your family will be spending its time inside the car, the Malibu should be considered a good family car.
#1 2009 Dodge Avenger. $20,505 26mpg highway, 16 mpg city
Our third American car on the list, Dodge is about as American as they come. With a name like Avenger, Dodge knew that they would have to back it up with a good car. From first glance the Avenger looks tough. It’s no nonsense, boxy grill, with sharp corners give it an intimidating look. The over all appearance of the car is formidable as it is on the larger size of family Sedans, but the Avenger is quite light and nimble compared to the rest. Being one of the lightest cars on this list, gives the Avenger the ability to nimbly manage traffic and pass people on the freeway. Keeping with the aggressive nature, Dodge decided to place audio controls on the steering wheel which will allow you to navigate your AM/FM/CD radio while you focus on the road. Along with its aggressive exterior and interior, the Avenger will aggressively protect you in case you get a little out of control. In an accident the Avenger will deploy its front and back curtain airbags as well as its cutting edge multi staged driver and passenger airbags which create less of an impact while still providing the necessary protection. Although the name may not lend itself to a family car, the Avenger is built solid, handles well and will provide your family with the protection you demand.
